anger - proverbs series PDF Print E-mail
Written by JR Cochran
I love the movies. Seriously, I see a lot of movies. If the film looks even mildly entertaining…count me in. I’ll even go to the theater by myself if I have to. I love the movie experience: the big screen, the previews, the $10 Milk Duds and the $38 popcorn. After you tally up the cost of the movie ticket itself…you have a pretty pricey night. But like I said, I love the movies.
So it’s only natural that I get upset when someone messes with my movie experience. Listen, these are Hollywood movies. They have the best writers, actors and directors that several hundred million dollars can buy. So you’ll excuse me if I don’t think your off the cuff comment makes the film any better. When you scream “That’s gotta hurt!” it doesn’t make me appreciate the on-screen collision more fully. And when you narrate, “ohhh! He’s mad now!” you’re probably right! But what you should be more concerned with is that now the guy behind you is mad, and he’s holding an $11 tub of Mr. Pibb that he is about to “accidentally” spill down the back of your shirt! I’m kidding. I wouldn’t really do that, but sometimes I’d like to. It’s such a little thing but it honestly gets me going. There have been several occasions where I have felt anger sitting in a movie theater. Hey! Hey! Hey! Don’t get super spiritual on me. I know I’m not the only one!

Anger is a strange thing isn’t it? Where does it come from? Why do we have it? It makes us irrational, defensive, offensive and sometimes, even violent. Little things make us furious. Relational conflict drives us nuts. And referees make us want to purchase firearms. Sometimes we get mad quickly and have an embarrassing moment of insanity. Other times we don’t even realize that we’ve been angry for several days and that it has been negatively impacting all of our actions.

What makes you angry?

How have you learned to handle your anger?

Are you an angry person?

How do I know if I’m right to be angry?
