Pride is one of the 7 deadly sins, one of the major obstacles to spiritual health. But so is false humility! Pride and Humility are two words that have been ruined by their religious connotations. We need to carefully define what pride and humility really are are. True humility is not like humiliation or self defacement and low self esteem (which can become an excuse for not living up to my potential). I would define it as accurately knowing who I am. And who I am is a very complex thing. I am a beloved creature of an infinite God, deemed worthy in his eyes of love and ultimate sacrifice. I am a glorious creature, made in His image and showered with marvelous gifts.
But I am also a limited creature, receiving all these gifts through no deserving of my own but freely in grace. I have nothing to boast about because I owe my very breath to my Creator. Without Him I am nothing - but with Him and in Him my life has no boundaries. The balance between these two poles is the point of this verse. If I forget that I am a creature I may become proud (this is the essence of the Genesis 3 temptation). But if I forget that I am His beloved, I may become discouraged and feel worthless.
I am neither worthless nor omnipotent - and that is humility. It means being who I am — embracing all the glory implied by that, and fearlessly embracing all my limitations at the same time.
